Money makes the world go round.

Fortunately for them, eager car owners know it. But when it comes to choosing the most fuel efficient cars in the world, decisions are tough. And that’s because cheap models trigger a high fuel consumption, just like the more expensive ones are sometimes focused on fuel economy. The absolute best mpg cars can mostly be chosen from smaller economical cars. Thanks to their lower total volume and their overall smaller demands, it’s the mini, sub and compacts the ones winning the fight.

Almost no car on the current market can do better than 89 mpg, at least not when talking about vehicles that aren’t hybrids or electric. The truth is simple, yet painful: not anyone can afford the luxury of purchasing a hybrid automobile. Most of us resort to the good-old diesel, just to save some fuel money. But if you’re truly committed to preserving the environment, we’ve constructed a list of the top 10 economical cars, regardless of engine specs and/or model prices. All we focused on when we compiled it was pure fuel economy.

So, what are the top 10 most economical cars in the world?

The US Department of Energy made a top of the most economical cars that are eligible choices, because of their incredible fuel economy. We stand by the ranking system of the organization, due to its accurate reviews. We’ve personally added three other models, to develop an invincible list of the best cars for fuel economy.

  1. The Volvo V60, a plug-in hybrid, wins the competition with a whopping fuel consumption of 155 mpg. The Telegraph claims it is now the most fuel efficient automobile money can buy. And it’s money you’ll need if you want this car because its price is somewhere around $78,000.
  2. The Toyota Prius plug-in version comes right behind the Volvo model, with an impressive consumption of 135 mpg. It’s slightly cheaper than the Volvo, fortunately for people interested in saving some money. It now costs approximately $52,000.

  3. The BMW i3 BEV, an electric automobile, offers customers a fuel efficiency of 124 mpge and can be purchased for the notable base price of $45,000.
  4. Another choice that’s worthy of our attention is the Fiat 500e, which comes with a combined fuel economy of 116 mpge. Its cost is quite friendly when compared to other models that are featured in this top. Users can pay between $17,300 and $26,000 for this particular automobile.
  5. The new Nissan Leaf could also be a valid option, as it comes with a fuel economy of 114 mpge. This is also an electric automobile, so environment-friendly people can rejoice. Its base price is somewhere between $29,000 and $35,000, depending on the extra features you want to be installed in your car.

  6. Next, we have the Smart Fortwo, which can be bought either in the convertible or the coupe version. This tiny purely electric vehicle has a combined fuel economy of 107 mpge. It may be too small for some, and it’s probably impossible to use as a family car, but it comes at an exciting base price: $12,500.
  7. With a remarkable economy of 105 mpge, the fresh Ford Focus Electric is a respectable alternative, especially if you’re interested in purchasing a car that fits your family perfectly. It’s yet another one of those electric vehicles, which is why its price is a little higher: $35,000.

  8. 88 mpg for the Renault Clio dCi 90 Eco, according to TopGear, and this model brings our feet back on the ground. As we said in the beginning, it’s quite difficult for diesel or gas automobiles to offer an economy of more than 89 mpg. This Renault hatchback can be bought for an approximate base price of $25,000.
  9. Still, 88 mpg for the Hyundai i20 1.1 CRDi Blue, which isn’t that bad, considering it’s also a diesel-powered vehicle. This one’s priced around $19,000.
  10. The Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi joins the 2 other models that we’ve mentioned previously, as it also has a combined fuel consumption of 88 mpg. The model can be purchased for less than $18,500.
